  Data Architecture Development

DMSi offers a range of services to implement an XML solution including process and document analysis, DTD design, user interface customization, third-party application selection and implementation, and Solutions-Based training.

 Training

The first step in any XML implementation is to ensure that the team members have a basic understanding of XML and the information analysis process. DMSi's Introduction to XML Concepts and Data Architecture Development Techniques is a 5-day on-site training session, focused on XML and information analysis. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the XML 1.0 Recommendation, its terminology, and use. Information analysis techniques are taught, including the basic strategies for identifying requirements and constraints for an application, and defining information components for expression in an appropriate syntax.

 Information Analysis

One or more data architecture workshops are conducted with appropriate client team members to devise an XML-based modeling methodology in which to create, edit, and store information components. Authoring, editorial, and delivery requirements will all be taken into consideration, and different markup models may be defined to suit the needs of varying information types. Participants in these workshops are involved in all aspects of the information development process, from authoring and review to subject matter experts, production specialists, translators, and instructors. Information assets of all types are reviewed, including existing paper and electronic deliverables, and any other current or legacy data sources.

 Data Architecture Development

The development of the actual data architecture translates the design guidelines and the results of the data architecture workshops into actual syntax that will be used by the suite of XML tools. The architecture will be developed following DMSi-established guidelines, ensuring an easy-to-follow, easy-to-maintain set of DTD or schema modules.

 Testing and Revision Cycles

As in any well-defined development project, a set of test guidelines, including sample instances, will be developed and executed. Customer tests are an integral part of this process, and user feedback is instrumental in ensuring that the architecture is solid and meets the desired objectives.

 Final Release

The term 'final' is a misnomer, as any data architecture is an evolving set of rules that change as circumstances change, new products are announced, and new delivery vehicles are designed. Final release does signify that this will be the version of the architecture that will be used to design the content management system configuration, and all delivery tools.

 Documentation Development

Documentation follows the same guidelines as development of the architecture - it must be easy-to-use and allow for multiple delivery formats. The documentation set includes a user guide, a reference guide, and a maintenance guide; also, help is incorporated into the proposed authoring system, if supported, for quick reference.
